Like a lot of people I suspect, I have several bikes. But just three that I ride regularly - a drop bar road bike, a hybrid for the commute and an Audax for winter training. The hybrid and Audax both have SPD pedals, but the road bike has SPD SL. I have to say I don't notice much difference between the SPD and the SL set, except I can walk easier in one than the other. There does appear to be slightly more movement for the foot with the SPD.

What do other people have? Is it better to have a variety, or to standardise?

Cheers

I stuck with a standard SPD design for compatibility, I can use any of the shoes for any of the bikes.

I then alter the style with the bikes using different pedal designs.
One sided small race pedals fo the fast bikes or platform type touring pedals on the touring machines.

There is a wide variety of design so you should be able to suit your needs from within the SPD range

I prefer to standardise cleats so I can choose which shoes to wear...
thicker shoes for cold or rainy days
leisure cycling shoes for touring
mesh fronts for summer ventilation
All fitted with Crank Bros.
My only exception is my town/commute/pub/shopping hack bike - flatties for normal shoes.

Which reminds me, need to get changed, time to get out there, the cafe beckons!

SPDs for me. I need to do a lot of walking in SPD shoes.
By the way, do cleats wear out? Mine do look a bit shabby, as I've worn them daily now for going on 4 years.

After years of running upto three different pedal types (Look, Speedplay, spd) on various bikes/trikes/'bents, I've rationalised to just one type on everything - Crank Brothers. The same cleats fit Eggbeaters, Candy and Quattro pedals so covering muddy mtb to road bike - although you do need to do a bit of surgery to the soles of mtb shoes to use them with Quattro pedals.

Crank Bros eggbeaters on both bikes.

Maz, I used to worry about that, but if you think about it it's the inside edges of the cleats that engage with the pedal, so being walked on a bit won't affect them.

I've just gone the other way. After running SPD on everything for a couple of years, I've just moved to Look Keo on the road bikes but stuck with SPD on the commuter (I have to walk in those).
+1 SPDs for the commute and keos for the road. Still fall off in either though :-(

i would recommend time pedals, i own time rxs ulteam carbon titanium(titan) pedals, they are the best on the market as i have used other brands such as look and aerolite etc, i am changing to time i clic carbon titanium as there even better.
