If your buying road shoes then the top ones are for road shoes.
The bottom ones are for mtb shoes.
I prefer mtb shoes and spd pedals for commuting as I can walk properly in them.

Thanks guys.

Which MTb shoes are good then? As in value for money best buy bargains  (if that exists)

It's not a case of best buy bargains.
You really need to try some on as some fit large some fit small.
What someone else feels comfortable in, another person doesn't.

However, try DHB @ Wiggle for a starter.

Some do, some don't. I use road shoes with SPD (MTB) pedals. It all depends on the sole of the shoe having either one type of cleat fitting or the other, or both, as mine do.

The shoes below will only take SPD-SL (Road cleats) as it has the 3 holes.

Where as the shoes below will take both SPD (Red) and SPD-SL (Green) cleats as it has the 3 holes and the 2 slots for metal MTB cleats.

It's a possibility that some manufacturer or other has made a shoe like this, although, I'm not aware of it.

I have these on my shoes:

You get a few more millimetres of pedal stack height, but not much. Walking is a lot easier and also, because of the two ridges, it makes clipping in a lot easier, too. Clipping in with a flat soled road shoe and MTB cleats into an MTB pedal is quite a PITA. These adaptors are great.
