Hi,

I'm after some advice as to why my pedals and the crank section has started creaking. Do I need to oil this at all? Or tighten something?

Sorry for the silly question, I'm new to bikes and not very technically minded.

Many Thanks,

Remove, clean threads and regrease pedals first. See if creaking stops. If not check crank bolts are tight. If still creaking remove cranks and check bottom bracket for tightness - assuming you have tools and knowledge to do so if not take to LBS to sort for you. It may be not enough grease on bb cups or they may be loose or the bb may be on way out.

Have you tried cycling in different shoes? I had a creak that eluded all my efforts to identify it, till one day I went out wearing a different pair of shoes, and the noise had stopped. Ah!

If that's not it, try turning things by hand, to feel for grinding. Both pedals first, then take the chain off and turn the cranks freely, seeing if it feels smooth and silent.

Before you take anything apart you should rule out creaking cleats assuming you're using cleats. A drop of oil or furniture polish on the cleat and the pedal should sort it out.

What type of crank / bottom bracket do you have?
