Pedal powered Scalextic: what do I need?

It was suggested at the social after the last Norwich Alleycat that we cobble together a pedal powered scalextrix/slot car racing set to use when the weather is too bad for them to be out treasure hunting around the city. Then we can still have good humoured competitive nights in the warmth of a pub/bar/cafe, etc.

By trawling the net, most of the pedal powered slot car racing sets that I have seen are based around bikes on stands, but I would like to stray away from that convention.

I would like to build fold away for storage recumbent frames so that they can be easily transported to and from the venue, but are also simply and quickly adjusted without tools to suit the individual competitors.

Here is what I have already got: 2 X Sussex bicycle shaft drive systems to suit SA hubs, several (1960’s & 70’s vintage) 3 and 4 speed Sturmey Archer Dynohub IGH’s (not laced into wheels), several weld in bottom brackets, bottom bracket spindles and bearing kits, a few semi cushioned stacking plastic office/church hall type chairs, an awful lot of ¾” & 1” dia X 16 gauge steel tubing, shelves full of stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers, and all the tooling, bending and welding equipment in the workshop to make just about anything I want.

I have never owned or used a scalextric set, so I would be very grateful for any advice.

Can I do away with the trigger controls, and directly wire the track to the dynohubs? Or will I need a transformer to convert the AC Dynohub output to DC to power the cars ? Ideally I would like the speed of the cars directly controlled by pedalling and flicking up and down the gears of the SA hubs for cornering and crossovers, etc.

I am bumping this back to the top again because I have been offered for free from a gentleman in North yorkshire about 200ft of Scalextric track with some cars, but no power supplies.

Any advice about hooking dynohubs up to the track to power the cars would be most welcome.
