I would like to upgrade the black plastic pedals that came with my new Scott sub 30 bike.
I'm not into special clip in shoe style types..just want a decent spikes grip style that any trainer can use.
Secondly,Being a novice, how easy is it to reattach new pedals..do I need a special tool or does a spanner and allen key do the trick?
Any recommendations?

The easiest way is to put the spanner on the pedal nut, pointing backwards in a horizontal position. The foot then can hold the pedal while pressing down on the spanner, using full body weight. This works for both threads! The LH pedal has a LH thread.

You'll need a pedal spanner. Some pedals can also be removed with an allen key but the spanner removes most. Its not complicated all you have to remember is the left thread is wrong (ie you turn it clockwise to loosen). I don't know why but the phrase 'into the frame to loosen' sticks with me. You might find if the pedals have been there for a long time they are fairly tight and might take a bit more effort/leverage. As for the type I can't really recommend I got sick of getting a pedal in the shin a while back and went clipless.

Do you think so? I have never needed one, I don't even have one, and I've never had an issue removing pedals. Maybe my spanners (a mix of Snap-On, Facom, Halfords Pro and, well, some crap that I found in an old tractor) are narrower than most but there seems to be plenty clearance.

Get the best you can afford, nothing worse if a click on pedalling developes.

Well you do with my pedals/ spanners
It's puzzled me for a while as I've seen much comment about pedal spanners and my LBS seems to do a good trade in them. I feel I'm missing out. ^_^

There's such thing as a specific pedal spanner? As you've said, a general spanner out of the toolbox has worked for me thus-far.

Swapped my MTB's pedals out for clipless and later used the old pedals on the mrs' bike as the ones that came with it were pretty wobbly..
Spotted some metal alloy pedals in Tesco for £8 and they did the job.. Not had any problems so far but only covered 15 miles or so..
