Such studies as I can find on pavement vs road cycling show that cyclists are significantly more likely to be injured by cars when cycling on pavements than in the road, but all the references I can find are twenty years + old and American.

Does anyone know if there are equivalent, fairly recent stats for the UK?

Doubt it, pavement cycling is completely outlawed in the UK so there won't be any statistics regarding it

I've been hit more in York's pedestrianised zones than the other areas though, if that helps at all

But what are the cars doing on the pavement?

Coming out of drives, crossing over pedestrian crossings, that sort of thing. The American grid system probably doesn't help - a suburban sidewalk cyclist will be crossing a road every 20 seconds or so.

Well if you ignore the ones which are totally parked on it ... the last one I saw earlier this week was driving along it rather than wait and give way to the oncoming traffic.... when I looked behind me there was a bike on the pavement and behind him a car ... I was naughty and decided to cycle the next 400m to school very very slowly!!

I've never met anyone from Biling, what's it like their?

I know a joke about a Bear from Biling!

A bear walks into a bar in Biling and sits down. He bangs on the bar with his paw and demands a beer.

The bartender approaches and says, "We don't serve beer to bears in bars
in Biling."

The bear, becoming angry, demands again that he be served a beer. The
bartender tells him again, more forcefully, ....."We don't serve beer
to belligerent bears in bars in Biling."

The bear, very angry now, says, "If you don't serve me a beer, I'm going
to eat that lady sitting at the end of the bar."

The bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve beer to belligerent, bully
bears in bars in Biling."

The bear goes to the end of the bar, and as promised, eats the woman. He
comes back to his seat and again demands a beer.

The bartender states, "Sorry, we don't serve beer to belligerent, bully
bears in bars in Biling who are on drugs.

"The bear says, "I'm NOT on drugs.

.........(ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?)...........

The bartender says, "You are now. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,That was a
barbitchyouate."

Cycling on the pavement? I was almost hit by some young chap coming around a corner on his motor-cross bike!

It was cycle lane to. There's a decent park here with a 6 mile route around a lake with some great views. It's always packed with people walking there dogs and cycling. A small part runs under a train track. I always ring my bell when coming into this corner and slow right down for this tunnel. But the guy came quite fast round the corner. I braked before he did. He just knocked my front wheel a tiny bit . He did say sorry though, after I told him he was going to fast, plus, those bikes aren't even aloud on the road, or in the park.

I've yet to build up confidence to cycle on the road yet. Dangerous enough going around the local park:tongue:
