I have just come home from the doctor's. I mentioned to him when he asked if I smoked that since quitting 6 years ago I have not felt well since and had a number of serious complaints. When I smoked I was as fit as the proverbial fiddle. He reckons that is more down to old age than ceasing smoking. Mind you, that is the same doctor who told me I shouldn't be cycling long distances at my age. I would just emphasise I have no desire or wish to start smoking again. I think it a valid question though about when will I begin to experience the health benefits of quitting.

I had a heart attack in April so have not had a cig since. I still find it togh at least 3 times each day and the other night had one of those dreams that seem clear as day ..... I bought some cigs from the shop I used to buy them from ....... Or at least it felt like I had. I can say that I have never coughed or been short of breath, so the health benefits I was promised didn't materialise. I put on weight recently which made me go out and buy a bike initially to do something about it, although loving cycling so at least I will get one benefit from it even if I don't shed a few pounds

I suppose one health benefit that you wouldn't be able to subjectively gauge would be the likelihood of developing debilitating lung cancer (or other smoking associated illnesses).

Well done on quitting (and more importantly, staying off the tabs)!

Rocky put it ths way: if it was so cut and dried in a scientific way you would see the premiums in pension contributions massivley differ. How many people do we all know who look forward to retirement and then die suddenly a few months into retirement. The only beneficiary is the pension provider.

I gave up because it was easier to do so because the wife did nothing but moan and beg me to stop. I guess there must be some lung activity that is reduced by smoking, but I would also bet that cyclists have bigger lungs to start with.

As a former nurse, I am always asking my husband to stop smoking

I helped look after my mum at home, after she was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer.
She had secondaries in her brain and lungs. She suffered a stroke and fell unconscious for a week, before passing away, 5 weeks after her diagnosis, at the age of 65.
Smoking does harm you; I personally believe that your genetic disposition plays a big part in determining whether you are more susceptible to contracting cancer.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I gave up smoking in june 2012 after being a smoker for 45 years. Best thing I ever did. Now and again I really want a cigarette, but those times are getting far and few between now

I have no issues with those who choose to smoke, i can hardly preach as a 20+ a day smoker for over 30 years.

It's your body, it's your choice.

I chose to quite and spend the money i was burning on a bike (or 2)

Nice bike for £3k which is what you would spend every year.

I have never been a smoker although I have smoked (and inhaled) I never got the bug.
I was married with a worrier who smoked and worried less until she started worrying about smoking then she stopped smoking and increased worrying. Of the two I think worrying is the worst and certainly more harmful than passive smoking.
