What percent of the original value should I accept when part exchanging a bike that is in excellent condition and is a 2008 bike?

Cheers.

I suspect you would get more selling it on ebay...

Agreed. Selling it on ebay or a forum will get you near its market value.
Whereas a bike shop will probably list it at its market value or slightly above, so are going to buy off you well under market value to make a profit on it and make it worth their while..

When i asked at my LBS, they were up front and honest...
From their perspective, its not worth getting involved.
To sell it and make anything, they've got to buy it at well under market value.
Then they've got the problem of selling an unknown bike..and they've probably got to put some sort of warranty it.
Then if they sell second hand bikes..it eats into the sales of new bikes.

Too much aggro.

I could be wrong (not the first time!) but I think the LBS also has to add VAT to the selling cost, so if they try to compete with the private ebay selley, they are at a 15% disadvantage, even before all of the other costs and risks are added in.

Barnet,
Many LBS's won't touch bikes on part exchange because there are too many nicked bikes out there and as many people can't/won't give proof of purchase reputable shops are reluctant to touch them.

Put it in the CC & CTC Classifieds?

I'm surprised your LBS will even consider PX'ing, there's no resale value in second hand bikes where a shop is concerned (excluding cashconverters).

After all your LBS wants to sell nice shiny new bikes.

flog it on eBay or your local Gumtree classifieds, you'll probably get more that way.

take at least two or three good pictures outside in daylight and make sure they are close -up rather than a tiny little indestinct bike in a huge background
You can upload them to photobucket
I'll help with any digital image editing if you need it.

If you want to make as much money as possible, split the bike up and sell the parts individually on eBay, otherwise sell it in the CC and BR classifieds.

Good point Will, that is exactly how to get the best return on a second hand bike, as the sum of the total is always less than the total of the parts.
