The paint has been scrapped away on the frame of my bike under the bottom bracket (by a bike stand) - I have since removed the stand and covered in old inner tube and bolted back on - is it advisable to treat the bare aluminium ? - I read somewhere that clear nail polish works??

I know the first ones the worst!

I'd get something on it quick. I can see the logic in nail polish..i was going to suggest some paint laqueur from halfords or the like. But get it covered ASAP. Aluminium can corrode pretty quick, then you've a bigger problem to deal with.

Nail varnish flakes off after a time. Humbrol Clear Laquer is better.

Aluminium oxidises to a white powder aluminium oxide when it gets moist air next to it. My Dawes got scratched. I didn't treat it to any more than Turtle Wax. No oxidation. Looks hidious though.
