Just done 1 hour on the excercise bike (22.5 miles & 590 callories) and had mild but sharp pain which felt as though it was on the inside of the kneecap. Not bad enough to make me stop or slow down but very specific and in both knees. Never had it before and just wondered if it is common and down to anything particular.

Was it like being stabbed with a needle? One off or has it happened again? If so when?

Sounds like me when my saddle is too low.[/[/I]quote]

Saddle definitely not too low. Have tried it 1 "position" down and it's too low.

It developed after 40 minutes-just a constant, specific & sharp pain (i.e. not a dull ache)....but as I say, not so strong as to stop me. Never happened before.

That's different from what I had, sorry I can't really help. If it continues ask your GP to refer you to a physio. Good luck.

Yes, happened to me a few months ago, but that knee was badly damaged in an acciident about 30 years ago and had to have major reconstructive surgery.

My mate is an Osteopath and he said it was wear and tear - and IIRC something about the femoral (sp) nerve becoming aggravated.

If it keeps happening I'd suggest going to a GP and asking for referral to a physio for assessment. Just ignore anything else the GP says, sit there and say 'refer me' until one of you gives in or runs off. State that cycling is your passion, and it's a serious sport for you.

Could just be tight quad muscles and a need for regular stretching exercises. But any recurring problem needs looking at.

If it becomes persistent please do not ignore it.

If you use cleats, check they are positioned properly. I once had a pain around the right knee which I went to see the doc about. He referred me to a physio. Whilst waiting for the appointment, there was an article in Cycling Plus about knee problems. It showed how the cleat position could affect the knee and how to cure it. I followed the advice, changed cleat position, went on a ride and have been okay ever since.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks to all. I will try a short sprint today at higher resistance and see what happens.
Must look up Selenium pills.
Doubt if it's cleats as although I have them on my road & MT bikes (which I've not used for 2 weeks) they are not on the excercise bike.
Will report back on progress but assure you (Nigel YZ1) that I will not ignore it.

My Go-To resources for knee issues - I think the C+ articles referred to above:

Knees 1 and Knees 2

They might not give you the solution but certainly give very good background so that, when you talk to a doctor/physio, you can (sound as if you) have some understanding ;)

I'd echo the suggestion/instruction to go to the doctor and physio referral - or go to a sports physio privately. Some good stretches can be the simple solution too.
