Hi all, first post so go easy please!
In march I had surgery on what is a very important part of a cyclists body (the bit between the lower back and the top of the thighs that sits on the saddle!) what I want to know is do padded shorts come in different thicknesses as I'm sure the more padding I have there the better it will be for me. And what is the cost likely to be? I'm very apprehensive about getting back in the saddle and want to do all I can to minimise the risk of further complications.

I'm not too sure about varying thickness padding in shorts, but there are certainly other alternatives available, such as gel seats, gel seat covers (wife uses one) and you used to be able to buy shock absorbing seat stems, all of which may help you.

I'm sure there will be more professional solutions along soon

Just bought my first pair of padded shorts today. Well first pair this century anyway. They made a massive difference to me and being a girl, I have a fair bit of natural padding. I did notice that my sit bones didn't ache at all after today's ride.
OH has his very first pair of padded shorts, again bought today. He was most impressed. Just a budget pair, about £25 from Tiso. OH's pair are a brand called Altura.

you do get what you pay for with decent shorts, i was using some alutras and the padding was ok but for longer rides

i will tend to use my 3/4 bibs from santini and the padding is twice as good, if i go over 50 miles i will

also wear padded boxers, the 3/4 bibs were about 80 quid and the boxers about 10 quid.

There are lots of different padded shorts with different pads and different prices (from Aldi/Lidl upwards) Visit your local bike shop and see what they have. You could probably get some for around £30 or less to try. They do make a big difference.

My Tenn Outdoors cheap ones have done fine for a first pair, but after about 900 miles have lost a lot of the padding. Got some DHB trace bibs now and they are a step up in comfort. I'll be getting some more similar in the future, or maybe even some club ones now I've joined a club!

Thanks, I have some of the aldi ones, just wondering if 'cheap' is nasty! Will have a look next time I go into shop.

I had some Aldi shorts. The pad itself was pretty good. However, the zig-zag stitching around the pad chaffed a bit on anything over 20 miles.

Aldi ones are ok for the money but there are much better ones available. Dhb or Endura are both good and not that expensive.

Aldi ones look a bit crap but I've found them perfectly fine for a 150 mile run.

Tenn Vipers are cheap but my least favourite - the legs are far too short and I've relegated them to wearing them under my baggies. The pad is good for 80+ miles though.

Tenn padded boxers - the pad doesn't really look that impressive but seems to work fine - I'd rate them better than the Vipers.
