I too am a recent newbie. I bought some Endura Humvee shorts which are baggy out shorts with a pair of Lycra padded shorts that clip inside. The outer shorts are great looking with loads of pockets. The padded shorts inside can be removed and worn with long trousers etc in colder weather.

I've got a pair of Humvees as well and the outer short is very good, but the insert is awful. The pad is just cheap thin fleece and I found it worse than useless. You'd be much better off spending £20-£30 on a decent pair of lycra shorts with a proper womens specific pad and wearing them under cheap baggies.

Probikekit and Wiggle both have a good range of womens specific lycra.

Do you really need padded shorts? If feeling discomfort after 5-8 miles, perhaps a minor seat adjustment would improve your comfort more than the wearing of padded shorts.

Have a look at www.evanscycles.com as they have a few shorts in the sale section, but if it's anything like the mens section they'll only have small sizes left if that's any good to you

Hiya Cyclenic and welcome to the board.
Only a newbie myself but been through similar

It's all about budget and what you want to use it for mate (just commute or more serious usage of the bike).
I have normal RonHill lycra padded - they keep the bits in place and give plenty padding for noth my Hybrid and road/racer.
I wear mine as ther are, or under Track Pants it's it's a little chilly/wet

I got mine for around £15 a pair on the net (3 pairs from two different suppliers)

Probably worth a good Google sesion to find the best supplier

Also, if you're new to it, try to go for "technical" tops which are of very lightwieght material and are "high wicking" which basically means that they wick the moisture (and heat) away from your body.

Although there's some excellent cycling wear, I've found it relatively costly.
There's a N*ke outlet shop near me so get all of the end of line tops for a fraction of the price - usually around a tenner and well worth it.(some of the hardened bikers way berate me for this!)

Anyway - that's my take

The padding in mine more than thin fleece - it is quite well upholstered - certainly I would not want to ride without them now... ;)

I'd agree with Snorri. I rarely wear my padded shorts, especially not for my 8 mile commute, so try without first and see how you get on before spending any money. If you still feel you need the extra padding by all means go and buy some.
