Currently i'm using padded lycra with normal shorts on top.

should i be using padded shorts instead of the lycra. And with what underneath? just standard comfy pants

Or should i get and wear both padded lycra AND padded shorts?

I'm still not comfortable (or shapely enough) to wear lycra on its own.

Wear what ever you like and feel comfortable in.
I wear just padded lycra on my weekend rides. (recent convert)
For my commute padded lycra and shorts still

Don't wear cotton under lycra. The padding should be next to the skin

Other than that, whatever makes you comfortable. Two layers of padding is commonly regarded as overkill ,though

This summer started riding in bib shorts. With baggies over the top.Till coming out of Bridlington on my tiny tour.It was hot.And the baggies waist band cut into my gut.Whipped them off.Ah the freedom.

Don't have the figure for lycra so in public places shops cafes on with the shorts.

Cycling off with them .

I was asking because i haven't bought any padded baggy shorts. I've just been using padded lycra shorts
So was wondering if it was worth the purchase

Yes... if you must then wear some thinner non padded shorts over the top.. but remember get used to riding with cycle shorts with a chamois direct next to skin.. it may feel strange.. but if you do otherwise you may regret

padded shorts under with baggie shorts over. Stops the ladies at work form shrieking with laughter when I arrive

For road I usually wear padded undershorts (Endura coolmax ones) and padded bibshorts 3/4s or longs on top - I don't subscribe to the "padding overkill" theory.

MTB I usually just wear the undershorts with plain baggies on top.

If you're happy with ordinary baggies and lycra worn as underwear, I see no reason you need buy anything else

I don't own any padded baggies, but I imagine that if you did get some they would be designed to be worn "commando"

Definately +1! I would be mortified (and lose any credibility I have left)... They even comment on my dayglo top so I just know what they would say if they ever saw my credentials in lycra.

Oh my gosh my first ever pair of lycra shorts arrived today and I've just got back from my first spin in them. So comfortable it's like cycling naked, sounds stupid but for the first 15 minutes I kept looking down to make sure they hadn't fallen off or slipped or something. What an invention, brilliant xx(

Got a new fastest time of 15.6 mph on my usual 17 mile evening run, so lycra does make you go faster. Mind you I was cycling like the clappers round any bits of Brum where I might bump into anyone I know.

Wouldn't be seen dead walking into work wearing them though, oh no.
