I'm with you Accy. When I go on my day tours I have 2 small panniers on the back. That is on my World traveller or carbon Di2. I take my waterproofs and fleece top, flask, sandwiches and fruit. I often have a towel and swimming togs in summer.

That is touring to me. Taking time to smell the coffee as well as the flowers. What you described is a training ride. It's like Audax riders getting mixed up with theTDF.

@Accy cyclist I think you were mislead by the "touring" bit.
My local CTC group also goes like the clappers, and they will leave you behind.
I did join their Meetup group online, but haven't been for a ride because friends told me about the speed issue.
It's just a name, does not reflect their riding pace.

I completed another Skyride Local yesterday, as leader. The CTC is more akin to the Skyride Social, where there is no real accountability for the organiser / leader. On the more structured 'Skyride Local' we have a ratio of 1 leader per 8 riders. This means that if the group is varied, in its ability / experience / bike type, we can split the group, then rendezvous at a predetermined point ( coffee shop / pub / whatever). No one gets left behind / dropped / asked to bugger off if they're not quick enough. If I'm organising a Skyride Social, I'll make sure I ride at the pace of the slowest rider, and I keep an eagle eye on the speed. We have a 'pace guideline' which is dependent on the 'ride level', which varies from <8mph for an "easy going" ride, through 8-10mph for "steady rides", 10-15 mph for "challenging" rides and "ride further" rides. These are posted with the ride details, ( along with recommended bike / tyre choice ) so as to help the riders decide, which rides are best suited to their experience and kit. So far, I've not had any problems, in fact I won the regional award for 'social organiser of the month ' for my region, and the Skyride Local Team leader of the month, for my ride to Hamble, a couple of weeks ago. The system seems to work quite well:thumbsup:.
I think I might be in love with you:smile:

My local CTC (Bristol) do various rides at variously advertised paces. I went on a medium or fairly-slow ride and there were one or two rather unathletic types on shopping bikes - who still did the 30 odd miles. Pace was very much as advertised and to be honest I got a rather cold dawdling (february), but it was brilliant espirit du corps with no one made to feel slow or even left to catch up and a friendlier group you couldn't hope to meet. There were a couple of very fit people on carbon racers who could easily have done 100 miles in less time but didn't as it was the slow ride. I imagine the quick rides and hell-for -leather rides are paced accordingly too.

Moral is ask about the pace beforehand I guess, just as I would going with a new group on an unknown caving trip say

It doesn't seem a normal CTC ride. My local CTC does slow, very slow and their quick is my quite slow. It's steady, drink tea and eat cake as often as possible.

I'm not yet ready to ride with them on a regular basis. Maybe next year?

I have seen your normal pace which is like me hanging onto a speeding motorcycle :giggle:
