P Clips - what size ?

I want to use p clips on my Merida Scultura to attach some full length mudguards.

Anybody any advice on how to measure the stays and what size to order. Have thought about just putting some tape around and measure that - but then seen on line I would need to divide that by 3.18 ....?

Any advice anyone ?

Have you got some vernier callipers to measure directly? If you measure circumference of a round stay as you propose, you then divide by 3.14 to get diameter to accuracy you want. You are dividing by an approximation to Pi.

Remember the stuff you learnt about circles at primary school?

Ming you are Merciless. I suspect the 3.18 quoted allows for the thickness of the tape (reading to outside of it and you want the diameter of the 'inside' of the tape) and assume it's 0.2mm thick . . . . . ;)

If you haven't got some verbier calipers, you could use an adjustable spanner, carefully close the jaws around the stay and then measure between the jaws.
P clips are normally measured by the diameter, not the circumference.
