Hey and welcome, I asked this question on a different forum and had a load of mixed replies,

they went from max user weight being 100kg, to saying there isnt a max weight, to if there are more spokes on rear wheel it will be fine, but i knw someone who is 19st and they dont have any problems.

Look at a bike and try it out in a shop.

You could put slick tyres on the mountain bike, if you still have one.

Since I bought a new bike last Saturday I happen to have the Cannondale Owners Handbook in front of me.

On all their road models they have a limit of 19.6 stone.

I'm a heavier rider.
I have semi-slick tyres on my mountain bike and it's a great ride on the cycle paths with the addition of some grip for loose stones and rougher ground. The bike and tyres cope well with me

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Dont worry that you haven't been on a bike for years. For me it was a 45 year break. If I can ride after all that time, then so can you. Welcome to the forum from powys and good luck.

Hi and welcome - on most bikes you'll be fine if sub twenty stone - I know a few pro rugby players who are ultra for and cycle - never being a problem finding bikes for them. If I were you I'd find something second hand and see how you take to cycling again and then maybe in a few months time you could drop fifty quid selling it and buy new with more idea of what will suit you.
There's some excellent hybrids that have road gearing - second hand is cheap right now - winter months.

Get out there and cycle the weight will disappear rapidly. Whenever or if you feel despondent come on here and plenty of people will get you back out on the bike - it soon becomes addictive and really enjoyable.

 @andyinthegrainge and :welcome: to CC ! :wahhey:

You are but the latest  in a long line of folk who have come to cycling and CC with a need/ desire to loose some weight. Most of them have done very well  and really benefited from the exercise :bicycle:, the sociable nature of CC :hugs: and now feel so-o-o much better ! :wahhey:

Ask all the questions you want answered - though it could be useful to use the Search function (top right, under your Username) first ;) ...

One tip is to try to do a little and often - most of us were puffing and panting by the time we got to the end of the road but can now go there and back without being out of breath ! Now that's progress !

Build up your mileage slowly and you'll be amazed at how quickly you get the bug :bicycle: and the distances you can do.

Ride Safe. ^_^
