Anyone ever done this? In the past I've always considered overshoes to be somewhat disposable, but I've recently bought a decent pair and want to make them last at least one winter season, maybe two. They always tend to go around the part of the overshoe that contacts the ground for those brief moments when you have to walk (into the cafe, out of the house to the garage etc).

So I was thinking of taking some pre-emptive action and reinforce them with 'something', bits of rubber glued to the base? Gaffa tape?

Any ideas or tales of 'don't do it!!!!'?

I sewed a piece of offcut pondliner to the bottom of mine, after wearing a hole in the bottom of the foot I put down at junctions

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I've used Duct tape - the silver stuff - to repair/reinforce the toe area and edges of the opening around the cleat with some success - def prolonged the useful life.

get real pedals, shoes and cleats. E.g SPD-SL, Keo's or time cleats.
Then the overshoe never comes in contact with the ground.

A bit leftfield, but you could, like me, wear them inside the your shoes- i.e. over your socks.

I find this keeps them clean and does just a good a job of keeping me toes warm.

You'll have to get a smaller size though.

Overshoes, inside your shoes? Is that what you mean moodyman?

Yes. In my first commuting winter, my toes would lose feeling due to the cold. So, I popped into Aldi but they didn't do my size (11). Their biggest size was 9-10. So I tried them over my socks and inside my shoes. They were snug.

Worn them like this ever since and it works for me. No wear n tear either.

It probably won't work if they're made of neoprene or some other firm material. Mine are polyester on the inside with some soft windbreak material on the outside.

I see what you mean now, I'm familiar with the Aldi overshoes, that definitely wouldn't work for the ones I have now (think thick neoprene with massive zips etc). But for me one of the objectives is to provide protection for my Sidi (expensive) winter boots, as I go out in all weathers/temperatures in the winter even though I work from home and don't commute.

Thanks for the lateral thinking though

With the SIDIs I'm using SPD, but I also have some Shimano SPD-SL winter boots, so the overshoes will be used with both systems.

like i said (hinted anyway), if you use SPD's then the overshoe will come in contact with the ground and wear that way. just switch to sl's for full time use
