I've just driven 30 miles to my local bike shop Tri UK to get some STI cable sets . I haven't managed to find any bike shop anywhere that sells complete sets made up.

The guy cut the outer cables of a reel and put them in a bag with some other stuff I bought the charge to my card was £55.00 :ohmy::ohmy:

I thought that was rather a lot but I had a seatpost and quill/Ahead adaptor as well. When i got home and looked at the receipt I nearly fell through the f*****g floor

£32.00 for 2 mts of black gear outer and 2x mts of black brake outer plus 2x gear cables and 2x brake cables. None of it anything special
Does that strike you as a rippoff? I am ceretain that a Dura Ace STi set is not that expensive and at least it would have Shimano Dura Ace stamped on it Grrrr

Worse thing of all ????? the silly t**t cut the brake cable outer in 2x 1mtr lengths which means its useless as I have a through the top tube cable run .......

thats not right. i would take it all back.

you could buy all that from CRC for the grand total of £16

you could get 2 105 sets from CRC for £30

I know shops have got to make money but that is ridiculous

thanks thats what I thought ..

I am pretty cross about it frankly because I don't like being ripped off (titeass) but mostly because I can't build my bike tonight and I have a another 30 mile drive to get some more cable:sad:

The 4 inner cables you bought would typically cost between £10 and £12, although they could cost up to £16 in the most expensive shops.

This means you've paid between £16 and £22 for the outer cables.

Whatever way you look at it they've ripped you off!

You should ask the price before buying next time and also tell them exactly what you want, ie. one long rear brake outer; don't just assume they will get it correct. In my experience they nearly always get it wrong - spell it out to them. And, if you are driving 30 miles check the stuff before you set off home.

If it sounds too expensive tell them, and don't pay it, otherwise they will continue to rip-off their customers. If I were you I'd stop shopping there. Shops that overcharge really annoy me and I make a point of not spending my hard earned cash there.

I did phone them to make sure that they had the Ahead/quill adapter I needed because it is an obsolete part . To be honest I don't think anyone is going to ring a bike shop and ask them what they charge for black outer cable off the drum. Who would imagine that an lbs would charge £32.00 for 12 foot of outer cable and for 2x inner brake and gear cables??

I went back tonight because if I didn't I wouldn't be able to build my bike this w/e.
I didn't bother arguing about the price because I just wanted to get the cable and get home.

The old tw*t behind the counter just had to start winding me up about how seperate bits always cost more blah blah and how he had never had any customer accuse him of over charging before blah blah .

By the time he had finished arguing the toss and making me feel in the wrong for even raising my concerns I blew a fuse and reminded him it was their fault I had to drive 30 miles and waste another £5.00 of petrol and an hour of my precious weekend to get a replacement cable and I hadn't received an apology etc etc

well I just blew up swore at him and stormed out the shop. what a stupid idiot I am for letting him make me lose my temper and ruin my evening.
