I'm seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist and much of the info on that leaflet covers what we have discussed. So much of the problem is psychological rather than physical.

Interesting. I always thought you should go when you gotta go, even if you're not bursting, and that holding it was bad for you.

I tend to be in the habit of hanging on until I'm bursting anyway. Whether that's made me any less prone to getting caught short or not I wouldn't like to say, but I'm still a slave to my bladder in a way I never was when I was younger.

Interesting pdf guidance but cycling doesn't always make it easy eg
When you feel the urge to pass urine, do not immediately go. Instead, try to distract yourself for five to 15 minutes from the time you get the first urge
...
This can happen if you get into the habit of going "just in case", because the bladder learns to hold only a small amount of urine.
Before I head out for a ride I do "just in case". Plus, I cycle in rural areas and hedgerows seem a disappearing feature, farmers prefering to being able to see the full unobstructed extent of their empire. Add that as winter approaches what hedges there are become less "opaque" as leaves fall.

One maybe overlooked point is as we age, our bladders lose their elasticity as it is, basically just another muscle, thus instead of being able to hold typically about 500ml. of urine, it diminishes. Also there are a number of health issues that will affect this situation.
