Hi,

I've been cycling about 6 weeks and really really enjoy doing long distance riding (only got to 40miles so far) but what i want to know is this:

This afternoon im gonna go out and do a long ride but, if I just 'Spin' i.e. take it nice and easy then presumably i cant really over-do it, is that right? - obviosly assuming i dont feel any massive pain or feel sick etc

Cheers, sorry for newbie question but better safe than sorry!

It depends how good you are with dealing with temperatures. I'd say there was a big risk of overdoing this afternoon on a 40 miler for someone that doesn't deal with high temperatures well. I did a 42 miler this time last year and bonked very badly as soon as the temperature went up, it was a big shock to the system.

fair point, maybe il just go for a shorter ride and save the 50 for later in the week.

No, do whatever you were planning . Just be careful. It maybe you're one of these people who love cycling in 20+ celsius temperatures.

Toby, do it, but just listen to your body and drink plenty of fluid, even if you don't feel that thirsty. Circular routes are handy, especially if there's a duck home early option from any part of the circle.

Take enough to drink (more than you think), something to eat and stop every now and then for a break and you'll keep going all day. Go for it.

+1 for the liquids comments as per above. I went on a hilly 42 miler Yesterday morning and went through 2 large water bottles plus another drink I got from a shop. Better to have more liquid than you need than not enough for sure!

Good Luck & enjoy,

"spinning" doesn't mean taking it easy at all.
In fact it works your "fitness" harder than grinding ...

I think you mean going slower/taking it easy

There's no such thing as overdoing it. What is it that you're afraid of? Pain is just weakness leaving the body.
its not the pain im worried about I just dont want to land my self up with an injury or anything

not overly, just fancied getting out in the lovely weather and also fancy extending my distance to 50 but I'm going to do a shorter (probs 20) ride and then do the 50 another time.

Thanks for the advice guys, its very much appreciated!

Yes, definitely watch the temperature & take plenty of fluids. I went out for a leisurely (ha! ha!) 54 miles today. I have set the heart rate zones on my Garmin and got it to warn me (beeps) if I go into my maximum heart rate zone. I've never ever got it to beep at me before. I usually make it up the Llanberis Pass pretty easily. Today I found it a bit of a struggle and my Garmin beeped at me.
I struggled in places, luckily I'd planned my route to take me past various family members houses for cups of tea and I treated myself to an ice cream at the top of the Suchnant Pass.
I am now totally knackered and sunburnt!

short of falling off, I don't see how you're going to injure yourself whilst cycling. it's one repetitive motion, if you can do it once, you can do it a thousand times.

Not if you're grinding too hard so it knackers your knees....

I did that when I did my 100 mile trip a while ago, a circular route with home roughly in the middle. It was tempting in the last couple of hours to do it thoughxx( but luckily I didn`t!!
