Hi, I'm going to visit a friend who has newly moved to Levisham, North Yorks (so doesn't know the area yet) at the weekend.
We fancy to have a ride out approx 50-60 miles, avoiding the treacherous A169 as much as possible - has anyone any suggestions?

Also, a big ask, I know it's v.hilly round there, go easy on the hills, as we plan to have a fine meal out in the evening and I don't want to fall asleep with my face in the soup!
Thankyou

You will LOVE the N York moors, I've done two Polaris events there and it's a stunning area. As far as I remember the whole of the moors is characterised by flattish terrain that is crossed by a couple of deep river valleys with very steep sides. Once you've climbed these hills you should be cruising.

If you get to Fylingdales, drop your pants outside the perimeter fence and give the security cameras a moon.

Welcome to my patch.

Levisham - The Horseshoe rules ok. A picturesque village if ever there was one.

One option, and the are many, is to cycle "Pedal & Puff 3" but without the Puff! There are a number of cycle routes utilising the North York Moors Railway and this one starts/finishes at Levisham Railway Station down the hill from the village. If you can pick up a Pedal & Puff leaflet from any of the stations along the line from Pickering to Grosmont, inclusive, or any local TIC, then you may be able to select a suitable route. On PP3 you can make it north into Eskdale at Egton and either go west towards Castleton or east to Whitby. The Magpie Restaurant if you have time to queue?

A Sustrans Discover Cycle Route Map "Yorkshire Moors & Coast" shows a lot of routes and traffic-free trails in this area.

If it's mountain biking in Dalby you're after, this again isn't too far away but it is on the other side of the A169 and there are others with more knowledge about these tracks and trails than me about this.

I just love the high moors, Eskdale & Whitby.

Hope it all works out.

Never cycled out there of course, but there always seem to be roadies riding from Osmotherly to Helmsley using the Burnthouse Bank / Hall Lane road via Hawnby (not sure of the B-number sorry), when I'm out that way with the family. Some steep climbs but the scenery is lovely out that way. Actually I'd suggest doing it the other way and stop at the Golden Lion in Osmotherly for a refuel.

Ok, thanks. I phoned the Pickering tourist info. They have a leaflet for the Pedal and Puff - it's not available online. I think we'll incorporate the 14 mile Grosmont to Goathland in a longer route.

If you get to Fylingdales, drop your pants outside the perimeter fence and give the security cameras a moon.

Bah, if only you'd said, I was near Menwith at Harrogate the other weekend, I could've done them both.
Bottoms up!
