Every bike I seem to look at at the moment is out of stock. Is this a common problem for this time of year? I've increased my initial budget from £300 to £400 but cannot find a road bike in stock. Not even in Halfords xx(.

yep, it's a transition time between the stovking of the 2009 and 2010 models

As above, unless there is a dramatic change in specs, last years models save you considerable sums of money!

There are also reports that the present financial problems are causing a rise in bike purchases and the manafacturers are finding it difficult to meet demand

Allegedly Raleigh has seen a 40% increase in demand in the first three months of this year over the same period last year. Halfords also are reporting record sales. BikeBiz, the industry website has stated that there was a 20% rise in sales overall in June compared to last year.

An article in the Independent explainssome of the issues

I think it's several things combining to create a shortage;

1. The "recession" has forced manufacturers to look closely at production and avoid over-producing

2. The CTW scheme has created good demand - my LBS say they've been taking money at Christmas levels for months. Even put the owners bike in the window to fill out the display!!

3. People are looking to save money on commuting and also begin to see cycling as a good way to get fitter for less money.

Point 3 is interesting. Does anyone know if the "posher" gyms are feeling the pinch? I stop off on the way to work at a Council run Leisure Centre for a shower (it's only half a mile from my office) and I've noticed that it's a whole bunch busier than usual in the last few months .. course, the monthly fees are probably less than half that of the David Lloyd one a few miles away ..

He hehe

How I read this first time was you stop in at the posh gym for a shower then go on to the council leisure centre, to use the gym. Re read it and found I had misunderstood, did make me chuckle though!

Cheers

Gawd, no. I'm a cheapskate. Plus, the posh job is too far away from work .. I'd be all sweaty again by the time I got here.

Still, I'm hoping to have showers in our alleged new offices!! Luxury. :biggrin:

David Lloyd seems to have slashed its prices. When I enquired many years ago they wanted about £60 a month. Now it's £40 something. But why go to a gym when you could spend that money on a bike and be out in the fresh air.

Absolutely. I have a swimming membership at the council run place, but that gets us unlimited family access to separate swimming complexes, both about 7 miles or so from home. And it means I can use the showers in the one nearest work. Don't like gyms .. :biggrin:
