 Ouch saddle sore

New bike (Kona Honky Inc), new saddle (marked: Selle Italia Q-bik) and my sitting bones are shouting!

The saddle seems quite flat compared to my WTB saddle and too wide at just the point where my sitting bones are. I wonder if a narrower leather saddle would wear in better; Brooks?

I guess its a case of wearing in my butt to the new saddle!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
You can get your sit bones measured at a specialized shop i believe to get the right saddle width.

Doing a google search on the wtb saddle i cannot see what saddle you currently have , maybe you ought to transfer the saddle off your old bike to see if you are more comfy and if you like it get another one?

I had a lot of trouble getting used to a road bike saddle and in the end settled on a charge spoon.

Trial and error for saddles im afraid. The charge ones are very popular and great value but may not suit all behinds. Im sure there's a share library thing on here that you can sign up to to trial saddles from other members, try searching for it.

For the money it's worth a try. I got the Charge Knife and it's pretty good, the Spoon is a bit more padded.

if you get a brooks and you don't klike it there is a high chance you can sell it for not much less than you paid for it. they get snapped up quickly on f orums you don't even need to bother with ebay

but you probably will.

Hmm - I bought a Brookes B17N narrow (I think) and I have to say I don't like it. The cheeks although not splaying are substantial as I figure all Brookes saddles are and my inner thighs chafe. The seat is a nice fit though.

I think I will be selling this back to cover my losses as my Selle Italia Q-bik is a nice saddle now I am more confident on the new bike. I think I was putting more weight on the saddle due to not being confident on the bike; now I am placing more weight to the pedals I am lighter in the saddle.

Picked up a new trek 1.2 today very nice. Seat is atrocious tho. Will be putting a brooks on it (I know I know) prolly a swift so my bum can be happy again. Incidentally trek have started using clix quick releases for front wheel (still trad for rear). I spent 10 mins scratching my head in cr park trying to get damn bike in car. And for those interested I can categorically assure you that sks p35's and continental ultragator 25's reside happily together on this model of bike.

Just a note - not everybody believes that sit bone width is a major factor in saddle comfort. Further, I'm sure I've read somewhere the opinion that the Spec measurement thing is a 'gimmick' dressed up as science in order to sell saddles! I wouldn't be quite that cynical myself but I would agree it's a factor amongst other more important ones.

Agreed - I found that the discomfort stemmed from my ass moving slightly as I pedalled and with the best shorts and saddle in the world this is going to result in chaffing in that area.

Maybe.

I'd certainly discourage buying a new saddle until you've exhausted adjustment options on the current one. If you follow that route, you'll have a shed full of part used saddles! Believe me, been there and done that!

Saddles are weird and personal things, and sometimes a law unto themselves. You can't always use the settings from one bike as a guide to another. My Brooks B17N Imperial, for instance, I have set lower than the saddles on my other bikes. Trial and error found that to be it's most comfortable position on that particular bike (probably something to do with frame geometry).

Sore sit bones could point to a saddle width issue... but, imo, you could try nudging your saddle back a touch to see what that does. When I'm adjusting a new saddle, I sit on the bike and picture what needs to happen to the saddle for me to be comfortable. Sometimes you can slide a little on the saddle until you find the sweat spot, or hang over the back, or sit on the nose... whatever. It HAS to be worth a go before pulling the credit card out!
