hanging-on in quiet desperation ...
Location
Kirton, Devon.
In the back garden I have a small Oak tree, I think the previous owner was going to train it into some shape or other. We've just let it be, but now it's about 10-12 feet tall and getting a bit lairy. It needs a severe pruning.
Out the front we have a cherry tree is a rough and wild state and that also needs some chopping back.

Question is, when, how, and how drastic?

Not had experience of pruning oaks but this might shed a little light:http://handbooks.btcv.org.uk/handbooks/content/section/3590

Get a tree person to have a look. They are cheap enough. Saves you the bother as well

We have a few trees and had a tree chap come a while back - it's amazing how much gets lopped off and has to be shredded. And how technical it is....
