Parts or full (pre)build + software?

Any idea what software you'll be using? You can then get benchmarks for it easy enough. It'll probably end up being a quad core + DX10 graphics card though as quads or extremes tend to get a good markup on the video benchmarks. Any preferred buyers - dell, acer, IBM ;) whatever? 5.1 ain't a problem though.

If XP, can you go 64 bit - I know there are issues, but might make some more advantage out of the processing and multiple cores, although you'll need the correct software to take advantage of it....

You'll want stacks of memory....god knows - my PC is 3-4 years old and a bit out of date now....

I should point out at this point memory map problems on normal XP of windoze make it a relative waste of time with 4Gb... (probably why fossy said what he did actually). This is also why you need multithreading software to get over the silly 2Gb limit and factor it up.

Peanut, there's a guy on there called meansizzler that has written guides to encoding. A lot of the people use TMPGenc.

Like Marin says, XP might limit you - I know my PC was limited to 2gb, although could run 3 but the FSB (board speed) would be limited... that was the board, not XP.

4GB should be OK with XP - I'm a bit rusty now, but google XP memory limit...think you'll be ok

Graphics card won't be a massive issue for DVD authoring an processing data etc....it's raw processing power - so look at AV forums to see what's the best. The fastest graphics card won't help that, although it will be great for the latest games .....
