Bad winter of heavy cold, severe cracked lips, and then strange lump on leg which pushed non painfully to up to my knee and stayed there led to an x ray of that knee and the slight osteoartiritus found, no explanation of the lump. Understand that cycling is good for osteoartiritus but are there anything I should avoid - standing on the pedals going uphill strikes me as one thing I should avoid once I extract the bike from its overlong hibernation assuming the lump is not a problem - have to see doctor again in early May.

No, cycling is fine as it's non impact, so even standing on pedals is OK - if it's painful then don't is the answer. Cycling is great. My dad started using my brother's old MTB last year for short rides - his knees are buggered, but he is fine on the bike. He is 70.

I have arthritis in my knees. I have been advised not to stand on the pedals by physio.
Otherwise, make sure the saddle is correctly positioned to avoid any undue pressure on knees. I can't see mild arthritis being a major barrier to cycling as long as there is no major pain

Have you seen an orthopaedic surgeon or on,y your GP? If only the GP, maybe push to see a specialist if not getting the answers you want...although if no pain, swelling, disability, it is unlikely a surgeon would do anything

@Mike_P, I also suffer from osteo in my feet, knees and hips, and cycling is fine for me, although the rubbish weather kills me.

The only thing I suffer with, is after about 40 miles or so (when I was riding frequently) is my feet would hurt from the riding, but I've put this down to the tightness of my shoes, as I didn't realise the feet swell.

Fortunately I didn't have conveyor belt locum's, but my GP was pathetic and told me to use crutches after an accident.
Because they failed to listen to what I said, they've left me with arthritis in my lower body and unable to drive a manual car.
Had they listened, I could've been spared some of the issues I have. Hope you're well though Nigel, and keep your chin up.

I prefer not to rely on GPs for my myriad (it seems) orthoapedic issues beyond prescription pain medication and referrals to specialists and physios. Which is why I choose to pay for private healthcare, just more convenient for me and I can choose who I see and when. I have made very good use of it, especially since I was knocked off my bike 2 years ago. Hopefully, when the claim is finally settled, my not insignificant premiums will benefit!

I have no complaints about the GPs I've seen, I too can't drive a manual due to left knee damage, but that's because the damage isn't repairable partly given my age and anatomy, but also where medical science is right now for articular cartilage damage (I.e. Arthritis). And my weight which is probably why my knees are less than pristine

Occasionally the knee has hurt when I have knelt on it which I always put down to having knocked it on something, have a habit of walking into open desk drawers in the office, but other than that its only very recently I have felt anything and its difficult to say whether its the knee joint or the strange lump. Have put on a Everyday Knee Support from Boots and if the lump has not gone by the next GP visit she will refer me to a specialist.

Finally have an appointment arranged for the last week of the month with a specialist over the lump, really getting me down as I dare not go out on the bike. Have a indoor folding exercise bike which gets trashed for 20 mins most days, but the leg typically feels very strange whist peddling.

Catch 22 Mike.My knee got worse, likely through muscle wastage. I now endeavour to spin all the time, and it certainly seems to work.

And I stay seated 100% of the time. Here it is important that the seat is high enough, a low set seat likely being more problematic

Its not the osteoartiritus that's troubling, its the strange lump. Todays hospital visit was brief, a sort of don't know what it is - best have a MRI scan.....another 2 months for that.

Good luck with that Mike.

For various reasons I had not exercised much for aboout 6 weeks.
What has got me going again is the fact that my hip pain got much worse, and from memory, not exercising can make things seize up quite bad.
