I have a pair of Shimano 'trainer' type shoes for commuting, no cleats fitted and i ride on Look pedals just fine. The key is to have stiff soles.
My Shimano ones (can't remember the variety) have moderately stiff, rubber soles. brilliant for flat pedals, clipless pedals etc etc. I only use mine for commuting...full cleated shoes for proper rides.

Hang on, since when can you use 'normal' shoes to cycle in? Next you'll be saying you can wear normal clothes to cycle in?!

Bottombracket came up with the best solutions if you don't want a fixed system (and many of those shoes will let you go for cleats).

My opinion, go for SPD cleat system. Clip in and go. Double sided. I use SPD on my fixed, for day to day use, and use full on road Look systems at weekends..........

Add Lidl cycling shoes to your list. Cheapest I've had in years and the best. They come with a plate to cover the cleat fixings and work very well with ordinary pedals.

I found a big difference when I switched to Shimano MTB shoes with normal pedals. This was due to the stiff soles. I've since moved to using them with cleats but the performance improvement for this was less noticeable (although quite satisfying).

I have MT42s

I'd buy them again like a shot. 2 years almost continuous use, wear them all day at work sometimes and if i hadnt been taking them on and off with the laces still done up (lazy bogger), they'd still be in really good condition. Still use them now, just the backs collapsed a bit (cos i'm lazy with the laces)

Shame is, i paid more for them than the ones in the link.
