Called in at my well respected LBS this morning and was drawn to some very smart looking Orbea road bikes.

I've not seen many, if any, on the road and was wondering if anyone on here has experience of them. The LBS guy was quite enthusiastic about the brand......

Any thoughts?

If the idea of a Basque brand appeals, then go for it. If not, then it's just another bike company selling frames with off the shelf finishing kit, much like any other.

My lbs used to be an orbea outlet before switching to bianchi. They were very enthusiastic about them. I think they offer a reasonably good guarantee on the frames from what I remember. As s express says above - it's probably more about the brand and if you like it. They are indeed smart looking bikes. I was within a gnats chuff of buying an avant with claris kit from my lbs, but had to go for something cheaper in the end.

My lbs is an Orbea stockist.
I think you can get better value for money elsewhere, but if you want the cache of a name then it may be worth paying the premium.

I have an Orbea Avant and love it. You don't see too many about which i also like. Use it as my daily commuter bike and its never let me down. Am looking to get an Orca to for the summer.
The guys on GCN use them but are obviously sponsored.
They are a smaller manufacturer but offer a lifetime frame warranty, unlike pinarello, ridley and Scott so must have confidence in their products.

I did like the idea of a lifetime frame warranty and the frames did look good quality.

The LBS I use has an Orbea Orca (I think) on display which does look very good value (105 groupset, Mavic Aksum wheels) but what bothered me was that the gear cable is not internally routed whereas the brakes are. They also have several Orca framesets from which they build bikes to the customers spec. I am thinking the external gear cable routing makes these frames an old model - could I be right? I never thought to ask whilst in the shop and only noticed when looking on the Orbea website.

My model Is 2015 and both sets of cables are internally routed but I did see an Avant with external cables in cycle surgery lately.
Re the orca there are 3 different frames for the orca OMR,OMP and OME. I think the OME has the external cabling.

Thanks, that is very helpful. To be honest, the external cabling for the gears was well concealed so as to be un-noticeable.

Ride one. Its the only way to tell.
Reviews are highly unreliable. How do you know that the reviewer has the bike fit right? That makes a huge difference to the ride experience.

I have had an Orbea Onix for the past seven years - fitted with Campag SR11 and Fulcrum RRS. Loved it and I always enjoyed the fact that I saw very few out on the road. I have just replaced the frameset with a De Rosa and plan on building the Orbea up as a winter bike.
