Open Street Map for audax?

Just took delivery of an Etrex 20 which is the GPS I will use for long/audax rides from now on. So, the next thing I need is mapping software. I use Garmin maps on a secondhand Edge 705 as it came with it but I understand Open Street Maps (OSM) might be the way to go.
  • Is there a best site to download OSM from?
  • Any recommended 'settings' to use?
  • How often is it worth updating the map?
  • Anything else worth knowing re OSM?
Cheers for any help

Here for rides.
My way, and ymmv,

buy the maps on an SD card from opencyclemaps, plug in to your Etrex. Ride. Smile.

alternatively digital download onto your own card from same source. faff about for a few minutes, plug in to your Etrex. Ride. Smile.

I do enough technowibble in the day-job to not want to engage in the whole mapological geekology of a weekend/evening.

My past experience of downloading OS maps  and putting them on to a micro-card  indicates that option 1 is definitely preferable.

Good choice. :bravo:
