Just an update on my progress .One year tomorrow I wheeled my new bike out of Halfords a hybrid with front suspension ( see avatar) my first bike for 25 plus years. To date I have riden 3049 miles ,2261 on the hybrid and 788 on the +1 road bike if you told me that a year ago I would not have believed you. I bought the hybrid as I believed I would be doing more off road than road , but with a couple of work colleagues who are now good mates found myself doing more road miles . So a second hand road bike was acquired through a friend of a friend I now also own a carbon giant . the hybrid is now my commuting bike 7 miles each way ( just one day a week at the moment) and winter bike .
My first ride was 6.6 miles . I have so far completed 6 metric centuries ( 64 miles) ,1 imperial century ,numerous 50 km rides (32 miles) and 15 rides over 50 miles. I am 3 quarters through the half century challenge were you have to complete at least 1 metric half or 1 imperial half century each month since January I am doing both 50km and 50 miles rides. This challenge really got me upping the milage in the early dates the 50km were hard and the 50m were a struggle . Now I do a 50km rides in two hours and the 50 m and not the challenge they were.
I have also met some really nice people on CC and enjoyed riding in there company. @totallyfixed ride in Rutland with @dr_pink ,@dave r and @4F was really enjoyable, Have met the milage monsters @Supersuperleeds and @MickeyBlueEyes who set me off commuting and not taking the short route longest so far is doubling the distance to 15miles.
Thanks everyone for all the advice in my year on here as well ,some of the advice had been taken and some ignored but all advice gratefully received .Special mention for @ColinJ for setting up the half century challenge as this really got me doing the milage I can no longer can do a 20 mile ride I have to complete the metric half century (32 miles)
Hope this thread encourage all the newbies to keep on riding Who I now find myself issuing advice too as if I am expert but can just relate to were they are coming from .
And most of all I have enjoyed riding every single mile.
Cheers for reading

Great to hear that from very little, great advances can be made. Im just starting out again after pretty much 30 years out of the saddle, my next target now is the metric half century.
Well done on your efforts so far . You've just got time to get your metric half in and build up for next years half century challenge for next year . it was that extra motivation to increase the milage that pushed up my milage .

@13 rider nice one, not done much myself this year, doubt its 3,000 miles yet.
@Reddragon @13 rider story is echoed so often, I don't ride an expensive bike just a cheap Viking, but I can put a few miles in, I started back in 2012 and did 3,000 miles in my first 6 months, nearly 9,000 in 2013 and 6,000 last year, I love riding, but other things have been happening this year, most I get to do currently is 6 miles to my mates, I used to do 20 there and back, but you get the idea, anyone can do this and whilst its not cheap, or it wasn't the rate I was getting through chains brake blocks ect it is very good for both physical and mental health, going out on the bike is pretty much the only time I go out.

Chuffed for you, 13

Out of all CC`ers I can relate to you the most. Just like you I started cycling around a year ago and went for a hybrid with sus (Boardman MX Race). After a few months I decided to get something a bit more "racy" (itch to scratch) and 6 months ago purchased a second hand road bike.

To cut a long story short... I bought a bike for a 7km commute and now do 100km rides... What a difference a year makes ;)
