OK, so realistically I do understand that different lube will be required for different conditions. I’ve stuck with wet lube for my hybrid and cleaned it off and re-applied every 2-3 weeks with no issues.

I have one road bike though, or at least I will have from tomorrow. I need to use it indoors and outdoors. It will only venture outdoors over winter if it’s dry although I could of course be caught out by the odd shower. I still have the hybrid for commuting if it’s a bit wet out and it will probably remain my main commuter bike until spring.

So what I want to do is have as smooth a transition between direct drive trainer and getting out on the road when the opportunity arises. I’ve got the same cassette for my trainer so it should in theory be a simple changeover and no issues with gear indexing.

Chain lube though I’m not sure about. I can’t have it making a mess everywhere for indoors of course but I don’t want to have to clean and re-lube my chain with a different lube every time I move from indoors to outdoors or vice versa.

I’ve just ordered some rock n roll gold. Have I done the right thing? What do others in this situation use? Yes I know it would be better to have a separate bike permanently set up on the trainer but I just don’t have the space and can’t be buying 2 road bikes at the same time anyway – I don’t think the other half would be particularly pleased with that.

Finish Line Ceramic Wet or normal finish line wet. Or bog standard Muck Off Wet. Both fairly light, easy to wipe off. Not keen on dry due to it clogging.

Wax might be an answer for your situation I have heard good things about squirt.

Although wet lube should be fine as long as you wipe off any excess after lubing.

I use Finish Line Ceramic Wax lube and have done for years on almost all the bikes: it works well in most situations.

Son's race bike uses a race lube. Expensive but effective.

If properly applied there should be no difference between using a wet or dry lube. With wet lube you do need to be slightly more fastidious about cleaning the bike after use if keeping it indoors - wipe the chain off with a rag particularly if it's been a wet ride. If you put too much on then it can make a bit of a mess though.

I just lightly smear vaseline on the back of the chainring teeth. My last chain ring lasted 10 years so it seems to work.

Whilst it is usually best to use the right stuff for the job, many bike jobs are very undemanding so it is also possible to overthink things. I just use car engine oil on the chain, as it's not miles off the ideal stuff, and clearly it's good enough to lubricate cam chains in a car - and because I've a half gallon left of the wrong grade for my car.

Wet bike lube, or indeed pretty much any other form of mechanical oil, any make, any price, whatever you like. Drip a blob on each link, and wipe off the excess with a cloth. I admit to using use Muc-Off, but not because it's a better lubricant, it's just because (a) it smells delightful, (b) it was on offer at Halfords and was the same price as their oil briefly, and (c) I'm a bit of a fanny like that. (The advertising man's dream). :blush:

I used those little tins of 3 in 1 oil when I was a kid and I'm sure it was just about ubiquitous, was there even a choice in about 1980? That worked exactly the same.

I used dry lube once and found that a little unpleasant, it clogged into little caked areas and it was that little bit harder to get rid of when I cleaned the chain.
