One of the jobs I want to do over Christmas is to, once and for all, rationalise my on bike tool kits. I have several different bikes but I'd like to get it down to 2 tool kits - road and MTB.

I like to carry enough tools to at least be able to to a bodge and ride home. So, anything missing from the lists below?:

Pump
Tube (26" or 700c)
Patches (Park or similar)
Tyre lever
Allen keys - to suit bike, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm as a minimum
Chain tool
Spare chain links
Cable ties
15mm spanner (for bolted wheels)
Whistle (call me paranoid, but for attracting attention in event of an off road accident)

Rather then Allen Keys get a multi tool that has Allen Keys, screwdrivers etc.
I also carry a couple of spare cleat bolts.
If you run with a filthy bike then a pair of latex gloves wouldn't go amiss.
Apart from the above, you seem to have it covered.

If you have traditional mudguards, then the appropriate spanner sizes for them is a good thing to carry just in case they start rubbing on the wheels/come loose.

CO2 pump +spare can - Tube - Patch/lever kit - Allen keys relevant for bike and cleats(2) - Mini first aid kit - valve adapter - £5 - Spare key for house and shed - 2pairs surgical gloves.

And my backup Cateye light in-case the cree XML's die.

On longer rides I carry a spoke key, NBT2 (lightweight cassette remover), and a spare spoke of each of whatever lengths are appropriate.
I've never needed any of them, but the NBT2 proved invaluable to another rider on the BCM600 who needed to do major surgery on his wheel at King's YH.

A portable bike stand is absolutely essential as well as a bucket of water for detecting small punctures. Also when I'm on my steel bike I like to tow a mig welder in case something structural happens. It's also never a bad idea to have a satellite phone in case you break down somewhere with poor phone coverage. If all this sounds a bit much to carry then pack it into a van and have the butler follow you on your journeys.
