Hi Folks,

Some advice please! I'm trying to restore my 1986 Peugeot Comete (bought from new) and getting it ready for daily use - yes, I know about the frame fatigue stories, but will take my chance!

I've been searching high and low for suitable wheels/rims to replace my original Mavic Velotech rims, to no avail. The 700C Mavic's have a slight aero profile, about 18mm outer width - still want to use my old 700c x 20 Michelin Tri-Axial Sport tyres, if possible? Most importantly, I'm after a polished rim finish that looks factory, to match the rest of the bike.

Anyone have any ideas please?

I'm also running the original Sachs Huret mechs and a Maillard Helicomatic hub (which is a bit ropey now)! I also have a brand new Maillard hub, but should I be looking into changing to a Shimano cassette/hub? The Maillard is 130mm, IIRC.

Many thanks in advance!

Johnny

Exal XR3 rims look (to me) to be a similar profile. Don't know how "polished" they look.

Modern Shimano hubs would not really be in keeping with the rest of the bike. Ambrosio Zenith hubs would look the part, being a copy IIRC of a classic old Campag design, but whilst most people have found them adequate, at least one member on here thought the bearings were pretty pants.

Mavic Open Pros TBH in Silver. Slightly rounded profile, but suit period bikes. Or old stock (but new) MA40's if you can find them - e.g. ebay.

I've got CXP 33's on my 90's Dura Ace equipped bike. Open 4's were available from early 90's - same profile as Open Pro but are a dark grey. Open pro are available in silver or black.

Thanks for the ideas guys! I must admit the Open Pro's had already caught my eye, but it's good to know what else is out there. I'm surprised how little is available for the classic road market these days...guess it's too small an area for the bigger manufacturers.

The rebuild is going very nicely - even had my LBS staff telling me to keep as much original stuff on it as possible, rather than trying to sell me new stuff!!! Will send some pics when finished.

You might already know, that sjs continues to sell some 5 speed Heliocomatic freewheels, but Sheldon didn't think very highly of those hubs.

Is it true those hubs have 130mm dropout distance? Anyhow if the frame is alloy (which wouldn't tolerate cold-setting very well), the new hub should match the actual distance between the frame's rear dropouts.

Thanks for the heads up about sjs!

Mine has a 6 speed freewheel and it is 130mm - surprised me when I measured it last week. I'm sure I read somewhere that they were supposed to be 126mm? Sheldon's write up was partly why I went for a spare hub, as I thought it was due replacement! Mine has held up OK, but the freewheel has always wobbled eccentrically when spun (by a mm or so), even from new!

There's a chap on ebay selling a number of Helicomatic new old stock hubs at the moment, if anyone is interested/mad enough! Cheers!

Hi Duffer, I am doing the exact same thing, but not going to ride it. Did you ever replace the rims and if so do you have the old ones? Let me know as i am in need of one Mavic Velotech (190fb)

Thanks in advance.

But if you want to keep the Sachs Huret gears, it's unlikely they'll work with Shimano cassettes.
Having said that, Mickle will be along to prove me wrong
