Hi guys I have been gifted an old pair of Krysiums, in need of TLC. The front has a busted spoke. The rear has a blown off rim. Is it worth getting them fixed properly? Is the rim on the front the same as rear? Could I put the front rim on to the rear hub? Or should I just nick a spoke from the rear, to replace the missing one on the front and bin the rear?

They have different numbers of spokes (front 18 rear 20) so you can't switch rims.

Also the spoke lengths will be different at the rear to the front.

If the front has a good braking surface left (doubtful) just buy a new spoke. I have a suspicion that the braking surface will feel and look rather concave through wear.

If there is a lot of apparent wear, you can also be pretty certain that the bearings are shot although that is not expensive to rectify.Check both for play.

The rear freehub also wears out - there's a plastic bushing inside it which contacts with metal and that wears it out. Check the freehub itself for play - if there is then its new bushing or new freehub.

Thanks Pete, I obviously did not have my thinking head on when I posted!! Of course the rims have different spoke counts.. The braking surface looks OKish on the front one, although the fact that the rear blew off is slightly worrying.... It seems a shame just to bin them.

If the rear is obviously concave and the front reasonably flat then I'd just do up the front.

Getting a new rim for the rear will be costly - you will end up paying the price of a nearly new wheel.

NB- if you are getting a replacement spoke then try and ascertain the year the wheels were made as Mavic have the habit of changing the hubs and the spoke lengths may vary.

I think that the gift might be wee a bit of a white elephant... New rim + spokeset + building (rear) + new spoke (front) + realistically at least new bearings + rebuild = probs more than I would ever pay for wheels, with my spaghetti legs...........
To even try to do myself = a world of pain, need to buy Mavic proprietary spoke key, bearing cap key and bearing driver, and then be sure that the bits I buy are the right ones...
