A mate of mine has uncovered this little gem in amongst his fathers effects. His dad died some years ago and my mate has never had the time to go through all the old boxes etc until recently. This is what he found, unused and still in the original rather battered box:

This is the original patent drawing and it seems the cogs moved rather than the chain. The gear cluster is locked solid but it will probably be usable after a good soak in some penetrating fluid.

The set you have there is a more the normal later version. This one actually moves the derailleur over rather than the block. I have Three versions one as yours, one has an arm that fits on to the block to slide it in or out with a cable in a similar position to yours. and the other has the gear cable like a Sturmey Archer to move the block. I have one where the cable is on the drive side but there is another version that enters from the non drive side.
