Hi all,

I found my old. I had forgotten all about it. Its an old Elswick bike, anyone familiar with this brand? Its gotten a bit rusty and lots of parts may need replacing. I might re paint it too. Anyone got any good pointers for me?

What do you want to do with it? Sympathetic restoration, fixed gear/single speed resto/conversion, restoration with a modern twist? You see my point? Try and think what sort of finished bike you would like and people can then try to help you in that direction.

Post some pics of the bike as well. The Elswick website actually has some bike assembly videos here, Elswick Assembly Videos. They obviously relate to their current products, but they may be of some general help to you. You Tube is also a great source of how to videos that I've found very helpful in the past.

Good luck with what ever you decide

A wealth of information thanks! A bit of sympathic restro I think. Maybe I'll learn a thing or two as well. Its got a lot of rust, so need to get that all off, and maybe I'll respray it a funky colour. Its the single speed bike I never knew I had! Will post some photos of it soon! Elswick is a bargain basement brand, so won't be investing a fortune into it!

I wouldn't say that at all. It depends on when it was made. In later years, quality took a nose-dive but in the mid 1960s and before, Elswick made some high quality machines. My 1939 Elswick rides like a dream. If you can find the frame number (on the top of the seat tube on the two I have), I can probably date it for you. Is it a lightweight or a roadster?

My apologies, Eswick must have a long history then. I won't see the bike again until next weekend. I'll see if I can find a frame number. Not sure what it is. But it is lightweight and has City written on it.

That doesn't sound very sympathetic

Apologies, I think the link I posted may have led you to this conclusion, I agree wholly with tyreds comments.

Good luck with it, ebay is probably a good starting point to source bit and bobs without breaking the bank

Hi

Been working getting the rust off. The front wheel is pretty bad, but not given up on it.
