Do try and keep up John. The shoes go on your feet, the pedals go on your bike, the cleats go on your shoes and clip onto the pedals. There are road pedals (Looks, SPD-SL's etc.) and road shoes and mtb pedals (spd's) and mtb shoes, it depends on what kind of riding you are doing. Road pedals and shoes are stiffer and give greater performance, carbon soles are best, mtb are more flexible but easier to walk around in. You see? It really is quite simple!

You can buy SPD cleats for a tenner if you need more (if you have more than one pair of shoes)
A tenner? I paid £1 for mine from the LBS.
