I've just bought a secondhand Sturmey Archer 3-speed rear wheel.

There is a plug over the oil lubrication hole. Does anybody know how to get it out please?

I've tried gently prising it but it doesn't seem to want to move. (I thought I'd put a questtion on here in case I damage it)

Dunno, but your other option is to unscrew the indicator rod (the thin chain that the cable attaches to) and dribble oil into the hole that it came out of. AASHTA

It may be you have a more modern hub designed for grease lubrication. When was it made (there will be a date on it)? I think it changed from oil to grease in the mid 90s but am willing to stand corrected. I have never seen one of the grease lubed hubs so don't know what they did to the oil port.

If it's older than that, it should have a brass fitting (1950s or before) with a small cap which pops open, like the lid of a toothpaste tube and it will always leak even when closed. If it's 1960s or more recent, it will have a plastic version of the same thing which won't leak.

I'd rather not take out the indicator spindle because the gears select correctly now.

The hub has 1988 stamped on it. The cap looks plastic or grey metal. As they don't seem to unscrew I'll try prising it out again.

Dont worry about removing the indicator spindle. When refitting simply select 2nd gear and adjust the indicator spindle until it's solid shoulder is level with the end of the axle.
