From this report:

http://world-news.newsvine.com/_new...-into-pack-of-100-bicyclists-11-hurt#comments

If you read the comments, you get this:

"Instead of commenting on speculation, I will say that I live in Charleston, SC which has many bicyclists. I am all for their hobby and work out. However, people that decide to choose this sport should expect that they are under possible risk. Drunk drivers or not. I have seen some obnoxious bike riders that will ride in the middle of the road as if they were a motorist. This makes cars veer into oncoming traffic to pass the dumb cyclist. This creates risk. Now add 100 people bikin all together. It's just stupid to do. Motorcyclists don't get any special pity, nor should cyclists.

Now if she was drunk, then I am sure she will get in lots of trouble and rightly so..... But that is speculation as of now. Excited to here the updated report."

If only I could *make* some car drivers crash into a wall! What an absolute idiot -clearly brain cell challenged I'd say. Frightening.

Hardly unusual though. Had a late overtake the other week, just as I entered a 20mph 'zone', on a blind corner then she pulled straight over to park outside the co-op! I stopped to ask her why: "Because you were in the middle of the road" (sic) "so I had to overtake!" .

Two days ago, cycling downhill at 30mph (keeping it steady, there's a lot of side turnings) in a 30 limit, overtaken by a woman who blasted her horn as she pulled in. I overtook when she reached the traffic jam, which earned another horn blast. She caught up eventually, I looked over my shoulder to see her gesticulating for me to get out of the way (I was easily keeping up with the bus ahead) - she pushed past, horn blaring - you get the picture.

Now most car drivers don't do this. Most (I'd say 95+ %) abide by the HC and drive with regard to road users around them. Some people however, have severe problems in their lives and take it out in their driving... Or something  .

Just about the multi-cyclist smash on road.cc.

It makes you wonder how some people manage to get a driving licence - get well soon to all those involved and I hope the woman gets what is deserved. DUI and on a mobile, but still they try to find out if the cyclists were partially at fault.

Now... I know this might make me look bad...

There is a descent in a Herefordshire village on a major-ish A road that gives me a goot chance at doing 35-40 mph.

No turnings off it, so I feel OK doing 35+. The limit is 30.

What happens very often is that I hit the top of the village on a gentle slop pushing up around 30 and a car comes past me as we both enter the 30 zone (from National Speed Limit).

Car then hits anchors hard and drops to 30 as I'm looking to push up past that speed as the drop gets steeper.

What happens?

I'm stuck behind the car at 30....

I deserve it, but it gets me almost every time...

No comment please about exceeding 30 in a 30 limit.... I have the brain of a small child.

I've found a better one. From the Melbourne Broadsheet, The Age, an article about a new police uniform. The article is about clothing for normal cops, no mention of cyclist in the article at all, yet the 7th comment is:
I think the police need to start policing first, and worry about new uniforms later.i.e. - stop catching people going over the speed by 3-5 km, and start getting rid of gangs, killers, rapists, drug dealers, and stupid idiots who think they own the road (bike riders for example)

gangs, killers, rapists, drug dealers and cyclists. Lovely.

(of course this is the same town that broadcast this on network television. Don't click the link if you are easily enraged.)

I don't see the problem with riding at a speed you as a cyclist deem safe for the road conditions what ever the speed limit for motorised vehicles is. If you feel safe at 35 mph you ride at 35 mph, you shouldn't be expected to abide by the rules in place for other road users.

Let's all stop getting worked up by comments on newspaper websites please?

If these comments are coming from the author of the article being paid for by the readership and advertisers thats one thing, but the 'comments' section of any website is generally the domain of the self-righteous weirdo who having spent their lives never building up the confidence to so much as say boo to a goose suddenly realise they have the opportunity to set the world to rights through the consequence free anonymity of comments sections.

We aren't a special case here.

Is the speed limit just for motorised vehicles?

Is the speed limit just for motorised vehicles?

Rule 124 and the table above it make no mention of bicycles and I've always been lead to believe that, with the exception of Royal Parks and other by-law applicable areas, speed limits do not apply to pedestrians, horseists and cycles.

I accept the possibility that I may be wrong though, I am only human (well only just).

Although of course it's probably sensible to stick to within the limits as there is probably a good reason for them.

Except of course when you are on a clear downhill stretch and you spot one of those signs that tells you how fast you are going. Then you are legally obliged to cycle as fast as you possibly can. If it doesn't pop up with a message telling you to slow down then you have failed as a cyclist and will be required to hand in your bicycle to be replaced with (tehehe bentmikey's reaction) rollerblades.

They make for a nice variant on the traditional "sprint for the village sign". Not only are you trying to out sprint your mates but you're competing against the sign also.
