What has happened to Cav two good stages to get another win,and it seems to fall apart.Just finished watching today's ride.it was looking so good, then somehow his mates lost him, they even pulled off the front to look for him,or is it me who does not understand racing.

Put it this way, do you feel great everyday? He is no spring chicken, so recovery takes longer as the journey goes on.

This. 100% this. Nobody is getting close to Cav's record any time soon.
We discussed this on the main TdF thread.

If Pog's career lasts and he doesn't get toppled by some new superstar he might be in with a shot in about 8 years, by which time he would be 33 ish.

No other current riders have any real chance. WVA - maybe if he'd not been at Visma for the past few years and had other duties at the tour might have been a contender.

Ah I'd missed that. But yeah, I'd agree with that.

I thought Sagan might have got there, but he doesn't have that single minded temperament.

No idea what happened yesterday - sounds like a breakdown in communications so the lead out people were on a different page to Cav

But he has always been the type of rider come only knows 2 places in a race
first and nowhere

so once he could see no chance of crossing the line first he just stopped trying

but that is what has made him so good!!

anyway - I would think he might have another go on if a sprint stage comes along and the team comms is better
he doesn;t like loosing - so I don;t think he will just give up trying

and he does seem determined to finish the whole race for one last time so he might as well keep watching for an opportunity

He seemed a bit hacked off that the team hadn't followed their plan, and Bol and Morkov moved up earlier than he expected, when interviewed afterwards.

IIRC Sagan managed to rack up a large number of second places. (But they all netted him sprint points, hence his huge collection of green jerseys)

Yes - Sagan was prepared to sprint for minor places everywhere there were points available even if he had zero chance of a win

other sprinters regard second place as the first of the losers

which is why Sagan was pretty much never seen in his team colours at the Tour for many years!

He was right behind Kristoff and De Lie. I don't think THEY have given up yet, so why assume Cav has?? in the post-race interview he clearly had planned to be at the sharp end, and wasn't happy about the poor performance.

Cav just doesn't bother going for top 10 places. Look at his stats - he has way more wins than 2nd+3rds together
