can anyone recommend a reasonably priced one (doesnt have to be ultra light carbon with go faster stripes ), and give an approximation of how much further back I might get the saddle if I used one? (kinda feels about 1 to 2 cms too far forward - of course it could be my arse is in the wrong place )

Cheers

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
If you have a zero setback seatpost at the moment, most of the standard setback ones should easily give an extra 10-20mm. Ribble have a good selection http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ProductList.asp?A=resetsearch&ProdPerPage=999&CatID=28&BCat=1,28&RootCatID=1
eg. the System EX, or the Kalloy Uno. Unfortunately it is unusual to see the actual layback quoted on suppliers websites.

No - ime most road bikes have seatposts with some setback, or rather most 'road' seatposts have some setback - the Campag Record ones for example. Remember you also have a fair amount of forward/backward adjustment possible with most saddles, though the amount varies. Having relatively modest leg length, I have to use a setback post and then position the saddle well back to get KOPS (knee over pedal spindle with cranks at 3/9 o'clock), Of course, if you have longer legs you gain horizontal distance by having the saddle higher, which has the effect of moving it further away from the bars, and then may not need a setback post ......
