I have a some odd noises eminating from 2 of my bikes.
Bike 1:
Trek 7.3FX. Get a funny creak / tick from the front wheel that seems to related to wheel rotation speed. Definitely wheel related as it does it when free wheeling as well as peddling. I initially thought wheel bearings. So I stripped the wheel and checked the bearings. They looked in good order as did the cups. So I regreased them and reassembled the wheel. Spun it in my hands and in the bike with no tyre / tube fitted and there were no noises. Sorted I thought. Put the tube and tyre back on and the noise returns when spun in hands or on bike. So the next thing is to try is a new tube I assume. But I can't see how a tube can make that sort of noise (unless there is something lose inside the tube - but what and how?).
Bike 2:
Trek 8500 (with hydralic disks).
I noticed that there is a cluncking from the rear that happens when going over bumps as if something is loose. Bouncing the rear wheel when off the bike does not reproduce it. Things that may be related to it:-
i) When the freehub engages after being spun backwards, it causes the rear wheel to 'ring' with a pronounced 'dunggggggg' noise.
ii) The rear brake vibrates and squeals when freewheeling for a few seconds. Peddling stops the the squeal immediately as does applying the smallest amount of rear brake pressure (not even enough to apply any braking force). But as soon as you freewheel again, the squealing returns.
iii) A few months back after a ride I noticed that the cone / bearing tensioner / retaining nut was lose on the cassette side. I tightened that up to just passed finger tightness. It seemed ok after, but the clunking started several rides / weeks after (I guess 100 miles or so later). I have check the nut and it has not come loose again.
I have checked that the rear wheel is fully engaged in the drop-outs and the quick release is tight (friction first felt when at the half closed position). Maybe the loose cone has led to bearing damage, or the water got in when it was loose and has now goosed the bearings. I will strip the rear wheel down at the weekend and check it out.
