I've hot an HG 7speed freewheel on a some cheap steel rims (qaundo, probs - well the QR is quando, but who knows what I've done in the past to make this wheel 'whole'). I've just put a whole new transmission on the bike, and I want to change the block but...

I'm having difficulty releasing it. Welded on with Road Sludge probably.

Anyway, I've had wd40 on it, I'm using a shimano freewheel tool, a large monkey wrench and a hammer.

So far, no joy.

Any suggestions - no vice available!

2 or 3 feet of pipe over the monkey wrench. I find hammering not much use as the wheel absorbs most of the impact. It is just a matter of sufficient leverage. Have you someone who can hold the wheel upright whilst you jump on the wrench handle.

This is one of those jobs my kids love to help with....and they get to learn about leverage too.

I hold the wheel (with tyre on & fully inflated) firmly on the ground in vertical position. Small child on end of 8 foot scaffold pipe over the end of the wrench...... even the littl'un can shift even the most recalcitrant freewheel

I struggled with one ,took it to the bikeshop .the mechanic put the freewheel tool in the vice and used the wheel itself to turn on.Took him a while of pulling on different bits of rim until it spun off.

It was me, with the pipe, in the garden!!!

Thanks a lot guys, leaverage won the day!

Amazing how 2 foot extra of leaverage creates sufficeint force to slide the freewheel into submission!

Winter ride ready for action!
