I was out yesterday morning for a 60 mile ride (longest ride I've done so far) when I got back I noticed that my little finger and the finger next to it had a pins n neadle type numbness to them, I thought this would ease of in an hour or so but now over 24 hours later I still have the numbness. Is there anything I can to to prevent this happening in the future? And how much longer can I expect this to last? Is it normal to get long lasting numbness in the fingers?

Cheers in advance for ure help !

Firstly, if it carries on seek medical advice.

I usedto use aldi gloves (and still do on short rides), but a few weeks ago I got some specilized ones with gel pads, they ut out a lot of vibration from the bars, and also cut down on the numbness of a long ride.

The pic dont shoe the ammount of padding, but these are the ones I have.

I am using very similar specialized gloves at the moment which I got as I was getting numbness in my fingers from some of my shorter rides. But they don't seem to be eliminating the problem

I had this when I first started riding. The Ulnar nerve has had excessive pressure applied to it and is possibly trapped. Nowhere near as bad as it sounds. I think mine lasted 48hours the first time and got progressively shorter with each subsequent ride. Gel padded gloves and or ergo bar grips help a lot. I find that shaking out my hands when I feel a tingle works wonders.

I also used to get this when I started cycling. And like the OP, again when I started increasing my distance. I put it down to fatigue - and don't get it anymore.

As well as what's said above. Try letting a few psi out from your front tyre, or get a slightly fatter front tyre.
And, of course, change hand positions regularly.

Shaking definitely works, comes back in seconds and is good for a good few miles before I have to do it again.

Tilt your bars upwards a little, if your wrist is turned down slightly when you're on the hoods that might explain the pressure on the ulnar nerve - 2 fingers numb classic symptom.

I had it after 3 long rides in a few days a few years back. Seemed to be down to hand position... not changing it enough. I rested it for a week or so, and haven't had it since.

Used to get a bit of it on my Hybrid, but not on drops, but then I move round more on the drop bar bike so could be down to lack of movement, are you on a flat bar or drops?

I have drop bars and I thought I quite often cange hand position and shake the hands, think I may have to check my bike set-up

Yeah, I got this for the first few long rides when I first got my road bike. Changed the gloves and the angle of the bars a bit and it went away, although it could have just gone on its own, who knows? Never had it on my mountain bike though
