Pardon me if this is quite a well known occurrence- but was rather amused at seeing not one- but two couples "at it" ;) down a very, very quiet country lane whilst out today- crikey- I knew this sort of thing went on- but have never seen it with my own eyes!!!!!! *Note to self- remember to take camera next time!)

Managed 25 miles today- but why- oh why- do I keep finding routes with sooooo many hills???? Must learn how to read an OS map properly!!!
I seem to be floating up my stairs at the moment!!!!

;):blush: The worst thing was I had just passed a few cars "parked" randomly- and subconsciously thought- "oh aye".......then pulled in for a quick sip......and there they were........

 Havn't seen that yet myself.

About the hills though - use www.bikehike.co.uk to plan your routes - there is an option to show the height and gradient of the hills, plus the distance etc.

I found a nice off-road footpath up the side of a hill last weekend. Shortly after passing through a tunnel I passed a very shifty looking couple on a bench. Couldn't quite help myself and made the comment 'as you were........' as I passed. Oops. Lucky they didn't chase me.................

Mapreading is very useful - online stuff is good, but if you can read a map, then you can plan routes on the fly when you are out.

Basically, the closer the pink lines are together, the steeper the hill. Areas that look very pink at a glance are very hilly (the Yorkshire Dales for example), areas that look mainly white in the background are flat (The Vale of York, for example) Little dots with numbers next to them are spot heights, so if there are a few in a line of a road, you can work out if a hill is going up or down. Little arrows across a road mean a very steep hill, and the arrow points downward.

You can also get clues from place names and objects - windmills are often atop hills for example, and rivers usually in valleys. I can look at a map for ages, even of a place I know well, just taking in details.

I don't know the symbol for a bonking couple though - I suppose they are quite hard to map.
