I read recenly in one of the car mags, sorry I cannot remember which one, that the Tom Tom 1 is currently the best budget model. I used a borrowed one during a recent tour of Northern Ireland and found it spot on.

I have a Navman which I like. It has European maps installed and had bluetooth to use as a hands free kit for my mobile. You need to consider what options you want. Mine cost about £140.

Get one of these; much more fun and you can blame her when you get lost:

Having convinced myself that I did not need a Satnav for a number of years. I decided it would be a useful toy for the car. I am now a complete convert. Yes, the map is useful to get a feel for the route. But, the final few miles lost, looking around streets is now removed. None of us carry maps for every city. We might know a few, a Satnav will take you to a postcode - so much easier. And, to top it off, they tell you where the speed cameras are as well.

I got Mr Plax a sat nav for Christmas. After reading various reviews and checking prices I got him a Garmin Nuvi 250 with full European mapping. It seemed the best value for money and seemed to have slightly better reviews than the Tom Tom One. He hasn't complained so far, but then this is the first one he has had so can't compare! Not that this persuaded me in my purchase but you can get a cycle mount for the Nuvi 250, and choose a cycling option.................

What idiot gave her the map?

She's clearly got a map of Paris (France - for the americans), and she's holding it UPSIDE DOWN!!!!

The river Seine flows south east to north west in a pretty straight line, and as it leaves the city it does a number of meandering u-turns.

Her left forefinger is on the river, and you can see it is clearly running bottom right to top left with few alterations of course. Therefore it is safe to say she is looking at the otherside UPSIDE DOWN.

Yeah, not only is she better eye-candy, she has the map orientated correctly.

The big green blob in the top of the map is the Cimitiere Du Pere Lachaise, where Jim Morrison of the doors has a tomb. On the middle of her map is a pennant shaped green area, that is Parc Des Buttes Chamont. As the park is north of the cemetry (and is 'south' on this picture), you can safely assume she is looking at the map the right way up.

Unfortunately, she loses it on the style marks for holding the map in the same 'right hand forefinger gripped, middle finger tucked' style the wissened old hag adopted in the first picture!

Also, why is she smiling?

A map is a source of geographical information, and she has the map open, which would imply she's trying to glean some information from it. Why would someone have a map of Paris? Someone who is not familiar with the area would, but as they'd be out of there comfort zone, and not familiar with their surroundings, they'd not be at ease.

I challenge anyone to read an informative map/book/magazine etc and smile.

You can't do it, it's false, and I have found her out!!!!
