Since I'm starting to cycle with the gosforth road club, I want to fit in more, so I decided to get some cycle clothing.
I'm thinking of getting a long sleeve base layer for winter, and a long sleeve jersey for summer + winter.
I'm not to sure whether I should get baggy shorts or trousers. Someone suggested getting long/tights and wearing them under shorts, but I'm not too sure if this would look daft.

What would you suggest to wear in terms of trousers/shorts for summer and winter? And FYI I don't want to wear tight trousers/shorts.

I'm quite confused really of what I should get so any help will be greatly appreciated

Rather than a long-sleeved jersey, a short-sleeved one plus arm warmers offers a lot of flexibility.

Regarding shorts and longs, if fitting in worries you then I'm sorry but it'll have to be tight ones. If you ride at speed the disadvantages of baggies will become very apparent. And you may think tight lycra looks daft but baggies with tights under them will look dafter.

In winter I usually wear bib longs, a long sleeved top, or a short sleeve with helly hansen underneath. Then of course I may have on a windproof or waterproof jacket, gloves and ear warmer thing (not sure of its proper name) or skull cap if really cold.

Incidentally Sam how did you find it riding with the club? What sort of distance/speed etc?

I have been meaning to go out with a club close to me, (sunderland clarion) but something always seems to crop up and stop me.

I wear licra cycling tights even though im not in a club because they are practical. No flapping about in the wind, dry very quickly after the rain, and they are comfortable.

I used to wear ordinary shorts but its like sitting in a wet nappy after its rained and they took ages to dry.On longer rides there is a potential problem of seams in ordinary clothing rubbing your skin sore.

Doing the Cheshire 100 miles yesterday it was clear that the fast riders were in tight lycra and those wearing baggies were struggling - not necessarily because of the flapping clothes but they wouldn't have helped, especially with the head wind going out. If you wore baggies in a club you'd get the mickey taken something rotten and you wrote that you wanted to fit in.

Thinking about riding with a club?

Not joined in yet?

Don't know what to wear?

( Sam's too late for this advice ).

Go down to where they start without your bike and wearing 'civvies'.

Stand across the street and have a good look at the riders.
