Just for comparison, I timed the last 21kms of last night's stage of the TDF.
21kms is what I did the other day and it took me 59 minutes. They did it in 25 minutes!!
In my favour is the fact that I was on my own as there was a whole bunch of them.
It is really a case of the turtle and the hare.
Now, why did I take more than twice as long? simple:

  • they are a lot younger than me.
  • they are much better trained.
  • they have much better bikes.
  • better motivated.
  • they are professionals.
  • they can substain high speed for longer periods.
Apart from all that, I think I can still improve on my time but will have to pedal faster.

They have little strings attached to all those cars and motorbikes, and get pulled along.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
That is their day job, they are elite athletes, riding in a group is a lot faster than solo,

They do not have to work night shift then cycle home at 3 am...................
