After gaining an intrerest in road cycling I have been looking into buying my first bike. I settled on a Scott Speedster S50 and saw it at a great price of £599 (down from £749) at Evans Cycles. However I am losing faith a bit as I have been let down twice by them in the last few weeks. I paid a deposit to reserve one and was told it would take 2 weeks to arrive, they even confirmed that the bike was available at the sale price. I got an answer phone message today from the asst manager saying that it was their fault, but unfortunately the bike was now unavailable. He did say that they could probably offer me a better specced bike for the same price of £599 and to ring him tomorrow.

As I am a newbie, i'm not sure what better specced bike than the Scott I should be asking for. Any ideas?

Cheers

Ask him exactly what make and model he is prepared to offer and post it here - Someone will reply and confirm or deny his claims pretty speedily, I would think

Well..get him to say what you can get..........

Main points...What components are on the Scott Speedster S50.... what's on the 'better bike' - then come on here..........

They are all 'samey' so see what he will offer, come away and ask..... check out the shimano hirachy.... other stuff.............sora, tiagra, 105, ............

Just ask here..don't get sucked in.......

Looking through the Evans website the other bikes in that price range will do just as good job as the Scott Speedster and have pretty much the same components - take a look at the Trek 1.2 triple or the Specialized Allez triple etc.

I have no personal experience of the Scott frame but would not expect it to be noticeably better than the two above.

without knowing anything about the bikes, my immediate reaction would be to say that £774 to £650 is good, but its not quite the same as £599. i would say that you had settled on the scott bicycle and had readied yourself to pay £600 for a bike and while the RRP on the trek is £20 higher, your concern is actual costs and for their error your being asked to stump up more and as such want to know what their best price is.

i'd also be looking elsewhere, its end of season in all bike shops so someone else might be doing a better deal.

if you were considering buying other stuff, pedals, shoes, accessories, you could say instead that the extra £50 means you can't afford those other things and therefore if you are to pay £650, you would expect a good deal on x, y and z accessories or pedals thrown in or whatever.

They look similar (to me) on paper, I think the Trek is prettier but if you've got a chance to ride them both then that's probably a better way of deciding how to spend your hard earned cash ;)

I don't think there's much between them - the Trek will be easier to sell-on though if you ever upgrade.

The other one (not Trek) is on sale for 650 and personally, I've never heard of that make...

I also think Virtual has a good point - try to stick to your guns or get some freebies thrown in!

That is a good deal. The 2011 model is £900. The only fundamental difference is that the 2011 is a very nice matte black which personally I like. Just been looking at them...
