If you do not use clipless pedals but instead use miniclips as I do is their any advantage using cycling shoes. I am using a good quality Nike cross trainer.

No doubt I will go clipless but not yet.

Stiffer soles. Better power transmission from leg to forefoot.

I haven't moved to clipless yet but do have some cycling shoes already which I use with miniclips. Pretty much as above! They are far more comfortable than the trainers I was using and no danger of sending laces through your chain-rings!

When it rains it doesn't take them 3 days to dry either

What are miniclips? I use knackered trainers and ondinary pedals which I know are not brill .. have to use your ankles a lot to keep feet on pedals, but I'm not ready to attach my feet to pedals yet...too steep a learning curve.

I use ALDI cycling shoes and flat pedals for commuting. The stiffer sole and velcro mean they're much, much better than regular trainers. I've just gone clipless on my road bike and have enjoyed it very much so far.

Mini clips are like a small cage that bolts to the front of your pedal which your feet slip into. Its the alternative to toe clips and straps.

That's where you're possibly going wrong. You need a nice flat straight learning doorway, not a steep curve, to master clipless.

Thanks MickL, sounds interesting. I quite like the idea of something that gets me used to considering my feet when I stop.

Me too, but I was still on our driveway....overlooked by an entire building site. And I was trying to look so competent!
